Harriet Nuttall Q&A

Showjumper Harriet Nuttall has an extraordinary record at Hickstead, having won the Science Supplements Speed Derby twice, the Science Supplements BHS Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Science Supplements All England Grand Prix - plus finishing runner-up three times in the Al Shira'aa Derby. Alex Irwin caught up with her to find out more about what makes her tick.

Who is your favourite horse?

A Touch Imperious.

One horse in history you would love to ride?

Big Star, it has to be.

Name a young rider we will be hearing a lot more from in the next few years?

There are a few, I would say Both Oliver and Will Fletcher, plus Oliver Tuff as well.

What is your greatest achievement in your career so far?

I think the record I hold with both A Touch Imperious and Silver Lift at the Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meeting has got to be one. Also my career with A Touch Imperious, having been crowned National Champion this year, plus his Derby record and the five-star Nations Cups he’s jumped in including the final in Barcelona.

Favourite sport?

I do love to play and watch tennis, and have been to Wimbledon a couple of times which I love. Mum and me get quite into our cricket as well.

Who was your first pony?

My first ever pony was called Cloudy, who was 30, and he had this crazy dipped back that used to catch water, which would freeze when it was cold! So I just remember during the winters having to go out and get the ice off him.

Most influential person in your career?

My father. He has always bought and found horses for me, including A Touch Imperious, Silver Lift and Carla. He has such a great eye for a horse and I would never be able to be here jumping these amazing horses without him.

What is the hardest thing about being a pro rider?

All of us are so committed and you have to be as working with horses is so time consuming. They all have to have a routine every day and to be worked every day, so it is a massive commitment. It’s a very intense industry - it’s a great sport but there are such highs and lows. You can be at a show on one of your best horses and have the time of your life, then be riding one of the youngsters and eating dirt in the next class.

Favourite moment in the history of showjumping?

The Brits winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics, I was there and it was truly the coolest day and that’s what we all strive to do now - especially now we’ve qualified for Tokyo.

What are your plans ahead of 2020?

So A Touch Imperious is getting a bit older now as he’ll be 16 next year, but he’s been feeling on such great form, so his main focus in terms of training will be towards the Al Shira'aa Derby. I would love for him to win the Derby and get his name on that board but regardless his record is so impressive and I think he will go down in history for that if nothing else.

I haven’t had the best season with Galway Bay Jed, we’ve just had a really unlucky year, but I’m really hoping next season our fortunes will change. He’s a really big jumper, so I’m hoping there will be some team events in the future for him. I’ll keep going with Silver Lift - he seems to really love Hickstead and the Science Supplements Speed Derby.
